C for T urges taxi trade to maintain quality service during Mainland's National Day Golden Week (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The Commissioner for Transport and Chairman of the Committee on Taxi Service Quality, Miss Winnie Tse, today (September 29) led Committee members and representatives from various taxi trade associations to call on taxi drivers to maintain courtesy towards passengers and provide quality service during the National Day Golden Week of the Mainland.

Miss Tse said, "Following the visitor arrivals to Hong Kong hitting a post-pandemic high last month, the number of visitor arrivals is expected to increase during the upcoming Golden Week. Coupled with the Policy Address highlighting the expansion of '+ Tourism' joint initiatives, the growth in visitors brings greater business opportunities for the taxi trade. We appeal to the trade to seize the opportunities, enhance service quality, provide e-payment means to passengers as required, make good use of dedicated fleet taxi stopping places to pick up passengers with pre-booked fleet taxi services, and firmly say no to illegal acts, acting in concert to reinforce Hong Kong's brand as the best city for public transport and the best tourist destination in the world."

The Transport Department (TD) has reminded drivers through taxi trade associations and taxi fleet operators to uphold a good service attitude and proactively assist passengers in need during the Golden Week, with zero tolerance for refusing hire, taking circuitous routes or overcharging. The Police will step up enforcement actions against illegal acts during the Golden Week to safeguard the interests of passengers.

To heighten deterrence against black sheep in the trade, the Taxi-Driver-Offence Points (TDOP) system has been in operation since September 22, 2024. About 230 drivers have incurred points for offences to date, including overcharging, refusing hire and not taking the most direct practicable route. Under the TDOP system, if a taxi driver incurs 15 points or more within any two-year period, they may be ordered by the magistrate to be disqualified from driving a taxi for three months for the first time, and for six months for each subsequent disqualification.

If passengers suspect any taxi driver of contravening any legal requirements, they can call 1823 or email tellme@1823.gov.hk, or call 2889 9999 or email info@tcu.gov.hk to lodge a complaint with the Transport Complaints Unit. The TD will follow up on the complaints subject to the case nature.
