District governance: audible upgrades bring safer streets

The Transport Department has been progressively replacing electronic audible traffic signals across Hong Kong since 2025. As of August this year, more than 800 pedestrian crossings have already been upgraded with new devices, accounting for 40 per cent of the city's total.

News.gov.hk spoke to the department on the considerations behind the design of the new devices and the progress of the replacement works. A visually impaired resident who had taken part in the design also shared how the upgrades are making every street crossing safer and easier.
