The Transport Department (TD) announced today (September 22) that a diagonal crossing at the junction of On Ming Street and On Muk Street in Sha Tin has been commissioned to bring convenience to pedestrians in the district in walking across the junction diagonally, thereby shortening walking distance and saving time. This delivers on the objective of optimising crossing and walking environments set out in the Transport Strategy Blueprint.

     A spokesman for the TD said that the diagonal crossing, located near MTR Shek Mun Station and Shek Mun Shopping Centre, benefits residents' daily commute. In addition, dropped kerbs have been added to assist the elderly, wheelchair users and people using handcarts in crossing, reducing the risk of pedestrians tripping. Traffic bollards have also been installed to remind motorists to drive past the junction with care. Pedestrians should continue to heed traffic signals to cross the road safely. The TD has briefed the Traffic and Transport Committee under the Sha Tin District Council on the implementation arrangements of the diagonal crossing.

     In 2024, the TD launched trials of diagonal crossings at two junctions, namely Sha Kok Street/Yat Tai Street in Sha Tin and Carnarvon Road/Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. Their overall operation has been safe and smooth, and has brought convenience to pedestrians with positive results. As set out in the Transport Strategy Blueprint announced in February 2026, the application of diagonal crossings will be extended to 15 additional suitable junctions, which will be commissioned in batches from the second half of 2026. Upon completion, the walking distance and time for diagonal crossings are expected to be reduced by about 30 per cent on average compared with right-angle crossings, benefitting pedestrians effectively.
