Hong Kong International Legal Talents Training Academy and Ministry of Commerce jointly organise Training Course on International Trade and International Investment Legal Practice (with photos)

The Training Course on International Trade and International Investment Legal Practice, a specialised training programme jointly organised for the first time by the Hong Kong International Legal Talents Training Academy and the Ministry of Commerce to enhance capacity in foreign-related rule of law, commenced today (September 7).

Addressing the opening ceremony of the course, the Secretary for Justice, Mr Paul Lam, SC, said that he was grateful to the Ministry of Commerce for its support for and confidence in the Academy. He said that as an international financial, trading, and professional services centre, Hong Kong has long maintained close trade and export ties with the Mainland and international communities. The training course aims to enable participants to strengthen their capability in tackling emerging risks and challenges, acquaint themselves with fast-moving policies and market developments, engage in exchanges with international counterparts, and develop informed responses that safeguard the interests of economies and seize the available opportunities in an increasingly complex global landscape.

The participants of the course include 20 senior experts from the Ministry of Commerce specialising in international negotiations and policy formulation, as well as dozens of relevant officials from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Mainland. The five-day programme covers topics including the evolving geopolitical landscape of international trade, export controls and sanctions regimes, emerging trade policy instruments, dispute resolution, relevant technological developments, as well as legal issues arising from Chinese enterprises going global. Speakers of the course include a professor specialised in international relations; practitioners from law firms, an accounting firm and an advisory firm, and representatives of the Department of Justice and arbitral institutions, as well as a member of the Hong Kong International Legal Talents Training Expert Committee. The Academy has also specially invited the Deputy Secretary-General of the World Bank's International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, Ms Gabriela Alvarez Avila, and representatives from the Trade and Industry Department and the Financial Services Development Council as guest speakers.

The Academy will continue to leverage the unique advantages of the Hong Kong common law system under the "one country, two systems" principle by organising more specialised courses on foreign-related legal practice, enhancing legal professionals' capacity to handle such matters and providing stronger legal support for Mainland enterprises expanding overseas.
