The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Judiciary today (August 12) announced the appointment of His Honour Judge Wong Lai-wing as the Principal Family Court Judge. The appointment will take effect from August 13, 2026.

     The appointment is made by the Chief Executive on the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission.

     The biographical note of His Honour Judge Wong Lai-wing is as follows:

     His Honour Judge Wong was born in Hong Kong in 1962. He obtained a Bachelor of Social Science Degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1985. He further acquired LL.B. from the University of London (External) in 1988, and P.C.LL. and Master of Laws in Human Rights from the University of Hong Kong in 1989 and 2001 respectively. He was admitted as Solicitor in Hong Kong in 1991 and in England and Wales in 1993. He was called to the Bar in Hong Kong in 2002. He was in private practice from 1991 until he joined the Judiciary as Permanent Magistrate in 2009. He was appointed as District Judge in 2017.
