EDB's response to media enquiries on HKU President's departure upon completion of current term

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is aware the Council of HKU has announced after its meeting today that Professor Zhang Xiang has decided to leave office as President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU upon completion of his current term on July 14, 2028. HKU will launch a global search process for the next President and Vice-Chancellor. The Government would like to thank Professor Zhang for his contributions to the university during his tenure.
The recruitment of the President and Vice-Chancellor is part of the university's institutional autonomy and is taken care of by the HKU Council under the authority conferred to it by the HKU Ordinance (Cap. 1053). The Government has full confidence in the HKU Council in selecting the most suitable candidate for the post based on the university's long-term interests and development needs.
