Update on Cluster of Candida auris cases in TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     â€‹Regarding an earlier announcement on Candida auris carrier cases, the spokesperson for TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital gave the following update today (June 26):

     One additional male patient (aged 74) from the same convalescent ward was found to be a Candida auris carrier through screening. The patient concerned has shown no signs of infection, and he has been discharged earlier.

     The hospital will continue the contact tracing investigation of close contacts of the patients in accordance with the prevailing guidelines. A series of enhanced infection control measures has already been adopted to prevent the spread of Candida auris:
 
  1. enhanced patient and environmental screening procedures;
  2. applied stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene of staff and patients;
  3. thorough cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned; and
  4. adjusted visiting arrangements as appropriate.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health for necessary follow-up.
