With the typhoon and rainy seasons approaching, the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Poon Kwok-ying, visited CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP) today (June 12) to learn about its measures to enhance the resilience of the power supply system against adverse weather. He also requested CLP to make comprehensive preparations for typhoons and heavy rainstorms to ensure a stable power supply.
Accompanied by senior management of CLP, Mr Poon inspected CLP's measures for enhancing the resilience of the power supply system, including upgrading the lightning protection systems at power stations to withstand lightning strikes, reinforcing outdoor overhead line poles in rural areas to withstand typhoons, and installing anti-flooding facilities at substations to shield them from heavy rainstorms. The implementation of these measures will effectively mitigate the risks of power generation, transmission, and distribution equipment being affected by lightning strikes, typhoons, and heavy rainstorms, thereby enhancing the stability of the power supply system.
Mr Poon said, "The risks posed to Hong Kong by adverse weather have been increasing in recent years. It is of utmost importance to ensure that the public would have a stable and reliable power supply during adverse weather. Apart from continuously monitoring the measures proactively adopted by the power companies, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) has established an emergency reporting mechanism with them. This enables the swift formulation of contingency plans for adverse weather. Drills are also conducted to enhance collaboration and emergency response capabilities among all parties, making every effort to minimise the impact of adverse weather on the public. The EMSD will continue to closely monitor and follow up on CLP's various measures against adverse weather, and encourage CLP to adopt innovative technologies to strengthen the management of its power supply facilities, with a view to further enhancing the overall stability and resilience of the power supply system."
CLP indicated that it would proactively implement and expedite various measures to strengthen the resilience of the power supply system against adverse weather. It will also continuously review and enhance its preventive, monitoring, and contingency capabilities to further enhance the reliability and stability of the power supply system.
