Update on Clusters of Candida auris Cases in Kwong Wah Hospital
***************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding an earlier announcement on Candida auris carrier cases, the spokesperson for Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) made the following announcement today (June 10):

     The hospital has identified two additional cases in the surgical ward involving male patients (aged 80 and 84) through screening. Both patients were found to be carriers of Candida auris. The patients concerned have shown no signs of infection. They are currently being treated in isolation at KWH, and are in stable condition.

     The hospital will continue the contact tracing investigation of close contacts of the patients in accordance with the prevailing guidelines. A series of enhanced infection control measures has already been adopted to prevent the spread of Candida auris:

  1. enhanced patient and environmental screening procedures;
  2. applied stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene of staff and patients; and
  3. thorough cleaning and disinfection of the wards concerned.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
