Update on Clusters of Candida auris cases in Kwong Wah Hospital
***************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority.
Regarding an earlier announcement on Candida auris carrier cases, the spokesperson for Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) made the following announcement today (June 3):
An 82-year-old male patient who had previously been admitted to the relevant Department of Medicine and Geriatrics in April this year, was readmitted on May 25 due to his underlying condition. Based on infection control and risk management considerations, KWH conducted admission screening for the patient concerned, and the patient was subsequently found to be a carrier of Candida auris. The patient concerned showed no signs of infection and remained in stable condition. He has since been discharged.
The hospital will continue the contact tracing investigation of close contacts of the patient in accordance with the prevailing guidelines. A series of enhanced infection control measures has already been adopted to prevent the spread of Candida auris:
- enhanced patient and environmental screening procedures;
- applied stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene of staff; and
- thorough cleaning and disinfection of the wards, including the environment and medical equipment.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
