The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:
An annual tea reception for the Legislative Council (LegCo) Members and members of the Boards of Directors of six charitable organisations was held today (June 1) in the Dining Hall of the LegCo Complex. These charitable organisations were Tung Wah Group of Hospitals; Po Leung Kuk; Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon; Pok Oi Hospital; Yan Chai Hospital; and Yan Oi Tong.
The President of LegCo, Dr Starry Lee, said since taking office, LegCo has been actively promoting the welfare of grassroot citizens; following up on issues such as poverty alleviation, support for carers, youth development and retiring on the Chinese Mainland. There are numerous social issues that require the joint attention and action of LegCo and charitable organisations. The experiences of and views offered by charitable organisations can assist LegCo in driving the Government to formulate policies and legislations that are conducive to the development of philanthropy in Hong Kong.
As the Special Administrative Region Government is formulating Hong Kong's first five-year plan, Dr Lee encouraged Members to strengthen cooperation and exchanges with charitable organisations and social welfare groups, working together to assist the Government in formulating a pragmatic and viable blueprint for social welfare development that meets the long term needs of Hong Kong.
A total of 38 Members attended the tea reception.
