
Correctional officers stop detainee committing self-harm

Correctional officers stopped a detainee committing self-harm in Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution today (April 27).
At 9.43am today, a 29-year-old male detainee was found cutting his forearm and leg with a plastic scrap in the toilet of a dayroom. Officers at the scene immediately stopped him and called for reinforcement. The detainee was conscious. After receiving examination and treatment in an institution hospital, he was referred to a public hospital for further treatment.
A clinical psychologist of the department will follow up on the case.
A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department takes all possible measures to prevent persons in custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institutional facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The detainee was detained in Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution under the Immigration Ordinance in March 2026.
