*************************************************************
Following is the speech by the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Miss Rosanna Law, at the FIP Bronze GO PARK Hong Kong today (March 21):
Adam (Executive Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties, Mr Adam Kwok), Edgar (Honorary Secretary General of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, Mr Edgar Yang), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
Morning, everyone. My absolute pleasure to join you today at the FIP Bronze GO PARK Hong Kong.
In recent years, we have witnessed the sport of padel grows at a remarkable pace across our city. Just now, Adam explained to me how it is actually (undergoing) exponential growth around the globe. Participation has expanded significantly, and padel courts have sprung up in various districts, with GO PARK Sai Sha here as a pioneer on many fronts. As many of you know, padel has officially been confirmed as a medal sport at the upcoming 20th Asian Games, set to take place in Nagoya this September. I am confident that the integration of world-class padel facilities, professional coaching, and a host of international tournaments will greatly accelerate the development of local talent. We look forward to seeing more youth teams, social clubs, and professional leagues join this vibrant growing padel community.
Today, this event brings together over 140 top-notch players representing more than 25 countries and regions. They will compete for the top honour through several days of intense competition. These exciting matches will undoubtedly showcase extraordinary skills, passion and tactical brilliance - captivating sports fans, on-site and beyond. Without a doubt, this is one of the must-watch events on the international padel calendar, and that's why I took up Adam's kind invitation to join you today here at GO PARK.
So my heartfelt appreciation to Sun Hung Kai Properties for presenting this fabulous event and for their continued dedication to promoting padel both locally and globally. Their strong commitment and sustained efforts are vital in ensuring the sport continues to thrive and inspire the next generation of players. I also wish to acknowledge the tremendous contributions made by tournament officials, coaches, volunteers and supporters, without whom this event would not be possible.
The HKSAR (Hong Kong Special Administrative Region) Government is committed to promoting a wide range of sports activities across the community. Under our Subvention Scheme for New Sports, organisations are supported in their effort to foster the development of emerging sports in Hong Kong. Through this, more opportunities and choices are available for members of the public to do more sports and lead an active, healthy lifestyle. We will continue to work closely with all sectors of the community to facilitate the growth of new sports and encourage greater public engagement in sports.
In closing, I wish the tournament every success, and all players have a memorable and enjoyable stay in Hong Kong. Thank you.
