WSD urges public to be alert to fraudulent e-mails or SMS messages
***************************************************************

The Water Supplies Department (WSD) today (March 6) alerted the public to fraudulent e-mails or SMS messages purportedly issued by the department.

The WSD recently received a number of enquiries from members of the public concerning e-mails or SMS messages purportedly issued by the department. These e-mails or SMS messages requested recipients to settle outstanding payments and click a link, which is not the official website address of the WSD (www.wsd.gov.hk). The department said such fraudulent e-mails or SMS messages have been continuously on the rise, and that members of the public should pay particular attention.

The WSD clarified that it did not send the e-mails or SMS messages in question, and will not direct customers to other websites with hyperlinks embedded in an e-mail or an SMS message, or ask customers for credit card information. Members of the public are also advised to note that all eBills-related e-mails to WSD customers are sent from customer_services@wsd.gov.hk or ccbs_no_reply@ccbs.wsd.gov.hk.

The WSD recommends that customers access their account information by logging into the Electronic Services Account through the WSD's website or by downloading and logging into the WSD's integrated mobile app "eWater" to access their account details and make payments. Moreover, the department is registered in the SMS Sender Registration Scheme by the Office of the Communications Authority. All SMS messages issued by the department will include the prefix "#" in the SMS Sender ID for easy identification by the public.

Anyone who has provided his or her personal information to suspected websites should contact the Police. For enquiries, please call the WSD's customer services hotline at 2824 5000.
