​A 51-year-old male person in custody who had been found unconscious in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre died in a public hospital yesterday (February 24).
      
     The person in custody suffered from pleural effusion. He required continuous medical care and follow-up at the institution hospital and a public hospital. At 9.16pm yesterday, the person in custody suddenly felt unwell inside a hospital ward. His condition deteriorated, and he was found unconscious during a medical examination provided by correctional officers. First aid treatment was applied immediately, and an ambulance was called to send him to a public hospital. He was certified dead at 10.35pm yesterday.
      
     The case has been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
      
     The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of indecent assault in February 2026.
