Employer fined for violation of safety legislation

Hitachi Elevator Engineering Company (Hong Kong) Limited was fined $200,000 at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (February 13) for violating the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on November 22, 2024, at a commercial building in Central. While conducting the handrail replacement of the escalator, a worker fell into an uncovered opening of the escalator truss and was trapped by moving mechanical parts inside. He was certified dead on the same day.
