​The Government announced today (December 8) that, in accordance with section 4(3) of the Legislative Council Ordinance, the Chief Executive in Council has specified January 1, 2026, as the commencement date of the Eighth Term Legislative Council (LegCo) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. 

     In addition, under section 9(2) of the Ordinance, the Chief Executive has specified that the 2026 legislative session will begin on the first Wednesday after the President of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is elected in accordance with Article 71 of the Basic Law and Rule 4 of the Rules of Procedure of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The Chief Executive has also, in accordance with section 10(1) of the Ordinance, specified that the first meeting of the Eighth Term LegCo will be held at 11am on the first Wednesday after the President of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is elected in accordance with Article 71 of the Basic Law and Rule 4 of the Rules of Procedure of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. 

     Notices announcing the commencement date of the Eighth Term LegCo, the commencement date of the 2026 legislative session, and the date and time of the first meeting of the Eighth Term LegCo are published in the Government Gazette today.
