Commissioner for Labour visits construction site (with photos)
**************************************************************
The Commissioner for Labour, Mr Sam Hui, and the Deputy Commissioner (Occupational Safety and Health), Mr Vincent Fung, visited a construction site in Southern District today (November 20), emphasising that ensuring safety at construction sites is of the utmost importance and calling on contractors and workers to actively participate in the 2025 Legislative Council (LegCo) General Election.

In view of a spate of fatal and serious work accidents in the construction industry earlier, Mr Hui said that contractors and employers should not prioritise progress over safety and shall conduct task-specific risk assessments prior to the commencement of high-risk operations, with safe work methods formulated and implemented. Employees should also co-operate with contractors and employers by following safe work methods and using appropriate personal protective equipment. They shall not neglect the importance of protecting their own and others' safety for the sake of convenience. Building a strong safety culture through industry collaboration is essential for reducing accidents.

Mr Hui added that concerted efforts of all parties concerned, including the Government, various stakeholders and LegCo Members, are needed to formulate appropriate measures for the improvement of construction safety. He appealed to contractors, employers and workers to cast their votes in the 2025 LegCo General Election to elect new LegCo Members who are responsible, ambitious and capable. He also called on all employers in Hong Kong to provide facilitation to enable on-duty workers to exercise their voting rights and fulfil their civic responsibilities on the polling day of December 7.
