The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department today (October 11) held an opening ceremony of the first urban farm pilot project in Ma On Shan Sai Sha Road Garden (MOSSSRG).

The urban farm in the MOSSSRG adopts modernised indoor cultivation system to carry out multi-layer farming, producing local vegetables and fruits such as salad greens, tomatoes and strawberries based on market demand. The public will be able to purchase agricultural products at the farm and take part in modernised farming experiential activities provided by the farm.

Officiating at the opening ceremony, the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Ecology (Food), Ms Irene Young, said that the development of urban farming is one of the strategies set out in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government's Blueprint for the Sustainable Development of Agriculture and Fisheries. Urban farms provide fresh, low carbon and quality agricultural products with "harvest-to-sale", and will organise agriculture related educational activities, enabling the coexistence of agriculture and urban development and enhancing the quality and livability of urban life.

The Government will continue to adopt a multi-pronged approach to promote urban farming, including introducing urban farming elements into the planning stage of the Northern Metropolis, providing technical and financial assistance to the industry, and setting up modernised hydroponic farms-cum-stalls on rooftops of the Tin Shui Wai Public Market and the Kwu Tung North New Development Area Public Market slated for completion in the coming years.

In addition, BEAM Society Limited has incorporated urban farming into the assessment scheme of the Building Environmental Assessment Method Plus, which becomes one of the indicators for green buildings with a view to encouraging developers to include urban farms in private development projects.
