Film Archive to screen 4K digitally restored version of "Feast of a Rich Family" in support of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (with photos)
***************************************************************
In support of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present the 4K digitally restored version of "Feast of a Rich Family" (1959) at the Cinema of the HKFA at 2pm on October 26 (Sunday).
The film tells the story of a nouveau-riche man, played by Ng Cho-fan, who brings his elderly father out of the slums and invites guests to a lavish banquet under the pretext of celebrating his father's beard, in order to flaunt his wife's new diamond ring. Through a series of absurd and farcical scenes, the film satirises the moral decay of the wealthy and the sycophantic behaviour of those scrambling to curry favour with them, while extolling working-class virtues.
"Feast of a Rich Family" was produced by the South China Film Industry Workers Union to raise funds for establishing a permanent office. Featuring Cantonese and Mandarin cinema icons, including Ng, Mui Yee, Cheung Ying, Pak Yin, Cheung Wood-yau, Hsia Moon and Shek Hwei, the film stands as a symbol of unity, collaboration and charity within the Hong Kong film industry.
With the Union's donation of film materials in 2024, the HKFA undertook the 4K digital restoration of the film, allowing this star-studded classic to be presented to audiences with enhanced visual and audio quality.
The programme will be accompanied by a post-screening talk by scholar Dr Lo Wai-luk and film critic Grace Ng.
The film is in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles. Tickets priced at $60 will be available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk) from September 26 (Friday). For telephone bookings, please call 3166 1288. For programme enquiries, please call 2739 2139 or visit the website of the HKFA at www.filmarchive.gov.hk/en/web/hkfa/2025/av-day/pe-event-2025-av-day.html.
In 2005, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization designated October 27 of every year as World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. It promotes awareness of the importance of preserving audio-visual documents from the past, which play an integral role in recording local and regional cultures.
