The Director of Health, Dr Ronald Lam, today (September 11) continued to lead a delegation from the Department of Health (DH) to participate in an annual bilateral meeting with the health authority in Beijing. The delegation also visited the drug regulatory authority in Beijing to deepen exchanges and co-operation.

Representatives from the DH and the Hospital Authority today jointly met with the Party Committee Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Health Commission (BJHC), Mr Zhong Dongbo, for the annual bilateral exchange on health between Hong Kong and Beijing. The DH and the BJHC exchanged views and shared experiences on the prevention and control of communicable diseases. Topics included using artificial intelligence to assist in communicable disease surveillance, responding to mosquito-borne diseases (including dengue and chikungunya fever), and promoting vaccination among the members of the public, especially adults. They also shared experiences in training professional talent, the development of traditional Chinese medicine and regulatory matters.

"The DH renewed its five-year co-operation agreement in the field of public health with the BJHC yesterday (September 10). Today, both sides had in-depth discussions on the details for implementing the agreement, which will lay a solid foundation for steadfast and long-term co-operation in the future. The agreement will help further refine the public health systems of Beijing and Hong Kong, and strengthen our capabilities in controlling communicable diseases in order to collaboratively respond to public health emergencies, particularly in the integrated emergency responses to major respiratory infectious diseases," Dr Lam said.

Following the meeting, the DH delegation visited the Beijing Municipal Medical Products Administration (BMPA) and exchanged views with the Party Committee Secretary of the BMPA Leading Party Committee, Mr Sun Liguang, and Director of BMPA, Ms Cao Wei, on advancing the development of the drug regulatory regime and aligning with international standards.

"The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government is committed to developing Hong Kong into an international medical innovation hub. The DH is actively preparing to establish the Hong Kong Centre for Medical Products Regulation (CMPR) next year and will implement 'primary evaluation' for new drug registration in phases starting next year. The establishment of the CMPR will significantly promote medical innovation in Hong Kong. It will not only help innovative drugs and medical products on the Mainland enter international markets, but also attract overseas enterprises to invest in scientific and technological research and development in Hong Kong. This will enable both Hong Kong and global citizens to access high-quality innovative drugs and medical devices earlier and faster, highlighting the HKSAR's role as a 'super connector' and 'super value-adder'," Dr Lam said.

The DH delegation will continue its visit to public health-related authorities in Beijing tomorrow (September 12).
