The Working Group on Patriotic Education (WGPE) under the Constitution and Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee organised a two-day study tour yesterday (August 27) and today (August 28), themed around the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Led by the Convenor of the WGPE, Dr Starry Lee, the delegation comprised members of the Media Publicity Sub-group, Mr Lee Luen-fai and Dr James Li; the Director of Information Services, Mrs Apollonia Liu; and 21 representatives from different media organisations. They visited various historical sites and museums in Shenzhen, Dongguan and Guangzhou, with a focus on patriotic devotion to the Chinese nation, gaining a deeper understanding of the gallant efforts of the war martyrs.

The delegation visited the Dongjiang Column Memorial Hall at Pingshan, Shenzhen, and the former headquarters of the Dongjiang Column in Tuyang Village, Shenzhen, yesterday to learn more about the heroic deeds of the Dongjiang Column of the Guangdong People's Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Force under arduous conditions during the War of Resistance.

The delegation toured the Guangdong Memorial Hall of East River Column in Dongguan, the former site of the Dalingshan Anti-Japanese Base, and the Dajing Revolutionary Martyr Monument in Houjie, today. Dongguan was a key base of operations for the Dongjiang Column, with Dalingshan serving as a major stronghold during the resistance and holding significant historical value. In the afternoon, the delegation proceeded to the Dongjiang Column Spirit Square and Huafeng Monastry in Guangzhou to explore the surrounding Red cultural resources, gaining insights of wartime efforts and the spirit of national salvation.

Dr Lee remarked that this year marks the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Guided by the core spirit of "remembering history, honouring martyrs, cherishing peace, and creating a great future", the WGPE has been motivating different community groups and the public to join diverse commemorative activities, thus helping the patriotic spirit take root in Hong Kong. She said she hopes that different sectors can enhance their awareness of the War of Resistance on the Mainland and in Hong Kong, strengthen their patriotic sentiments, and work together to cherish and safeguard peace. This will help cultivate patriotic feelings and foster a strong sense of national identity and belonging.
