CHP investigates case of severe paediatric enterovirus infection
***************************************************************

     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (Aug 18) investigating a case of severe paediatric enterovirus (EV) infection, and reminded the public to observe good hand, personal and environmental hygiene.

     The case involves an approximately two-month-old female infant with underlying illnesses. On August 13, she developed fever and became lethargic. She was taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Mary Hospital on the same day, where she was admitted for treatment. She recovered and was discharged yesterday (August 17).

     A laboratory test of her cerebrospinal fluid specimen was positive for EV. The clinical diagnosis was meningitis.

     Preliminary investigation by the CHP revealed that the patient resides in a residential special child care centre and had no travel history during the incubation period. Recently, the special child care centre concerned reported two cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) involving two girls, one aged 2 months and the other 6 months. Since August 15, they developed oral ulcers, rashes on their hands or feet as well as fever. After seeking medical attention, they were diagnosed with HFMD. Both patients required hospitalisation, and are in stable condition without complications.

     The CHP officers have inspected the special child care centre and advised the staff on necessary infection control and preventive measures. Other children and staff at the facility are under medical surveillance. The CHP will continue to investigate the case.

     HFMD is a common disease in children caused by EV. EV infection is transmitted by direct contact with the nasal and throat secretions of an infected person. Children with EV infection should stay at home until they have recovered to avoid infecting other children. The public should be vigilant and observe the following preventive measures:

  • Wash hands before eating and after going to the toilet and changing diapers;
  • Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing;
  • Maintain good indoor ventilation; and
  • Thoroughly clean toys or appliances contaminated by nasal or oral secretions.
