The Steering Committee was established in 2012 to formulate and oversee the implementation of the Food Wise Hong Kong Campaign. Its objectives are to raise public awareness of Hong Kong's food waste issues, co-ordinate government departments and public institutions to lead by example in reducing food waste, and encourage and facilitate the separation and recycling of unavoidable food waste at the source. The Steering Committee will continue to strengthen the promotion and publicity of food waste recycling and has developed a series of plans to enhance training, support, publicity and education to encourage and assist various sectors of society in participating in food waste reduction and recycling.
