The Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Mr Mickey Lai, attended the 5th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ocean-Related Ministerial Meeting (AOMM5) held yesterday (April 30) and today (May 1) in Busan, Korea, to exchange views with other member economies on various topics, such as enhancing ocean resilience, promoting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, and fostering inclusive and sustainable economic development in the ocean and fisheries sectors.

The AOMM5, themed "Navigating our Blue Future - Connection, Innovation and Prosperity", aims at fostering regional co-operation and sustainable prosperity for ocean and coastal economies. This meeting marks the first ocean-related ministerial meeting in a decade, with representatives from all 19 APEC member economies in attendance. All member economies reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ocean sustainability, regional co-operation, and innovative marine management at the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Lai said that the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) will continue to collaborate with member economies to promote sustainable fisheries and economic development of the ocean in the Asia-Pacific region. Additionally, he introduced the visions and work targets for the modernisation and sustainable development of the fisheries industry as outlined in the Blueprint for the Sustainable Development of Agriculture and Fisheries, which was formulated jointly by the HKSAR Government and the trade. At the meeting, he also reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the HKSAR Government to marine conservation, regional collaboration and collective economic prosperity, and underscored the necessity of collaborative efforts among member economies to address the pressing challenges faced by the oceans and to build a resilient and sustainable marine environment.

Mr Lai also visited the Fisheries Monitoring Center in Busan, where he learned about the fisheries monitoring system and the electronic monitoring pilot project, and exchanged views with other member economies on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

The HKSAR Government will actively collaborate with APEC on ocean sustainability, contributing to ocean management in the Asia-Pacific region, and will continue to maintain close communication and co-operation with APEC member economies on topics related to marine conservation and the promotion of sustainable fisheries development.
