***********************************************************************
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (Sydney ETO) supported the Sing Fai Cantonese Opera Promotion Association in staging two performances of "Sing Fai Sydney Cultural Exchange: Advancing the Cantonese Opera Heritage" in Sydney, Australia, yesterday (April 18) to promote cultural exchange between Hong Kong and Australia and showcase the charm of Cantonese opera to Australian audiences.

The performances featured over 20 Hong Kong young performers. Their excellent skills and passion for Cantonese opera left a lasting impression on about 700 audiences.

In her welcoming remarks, the Head of Public Relations of the Sydney ETO, Ms Jane Liu, said that Cantonese opera is a traditional arts and culture of iconic significance in Hong Kong.  The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government attaches great importance to the development of Cantonese opera and has all along been providing active support to the transmission, study, promotion and continuous development of Cantonese opera through various ways.

She pointed out that the National 14th Five-Year Plan clearly supports Hong Kong to develop into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. The Government will continue to make every effort to establish world-class cultural facilities and a pluralistic cultural environment.

Sydney ETO will continue to collaborate with the arts communities in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand to showcase Hong Kong's outstanding artistic works and talents in the two places, tell the good stories of Hong Kong and promote Chinese culture.
