Investigation Report on accident of Zlin Z 242 L aircraft published
*******************************************************************
The Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) today (April 7) published the Investigation Report IVR-2025-01 on the investigation into an accident involving a Zlin Z 242 L aircraft (registration mark B-LUK) operated by the Hong Kong Aviation Club (HKAC) (now renamed as Aviation Club of Hong Kong, China) at Ma Shi Chau, Hong Kong, on June 24, 2018.

At 4.29pm on the day of the accident, the pilot of the aircraft took off from Shek Kong Airfield, intending to conduct a flight around Tolo Harbour. At 4.35pm, the pilot lost control inflight, and the aircraft impacted terrain on Ma Shi Chau, Tolo Harbour. The pilot suffered minor head injuries but was able to evacuate from the aircraft.

The investigation identified that the cause of the accident was the pilot initiating an incipient spin below the minimum altitude required by the HKAC for spinning. The manoeuvre then developed into a full spin, and the pilot lost control of the aircraft. The pilot regained control of the aircraft at an altitude that limited effective recovery, resulting in the aircraft impacting terrain. The investigation team has made two safety recommendations to the Aviation Club of Hong Kong, China.

The investigation was conducted by a team of professional investigators in strict adherence to international standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). "The objective of the investigation was to identify the circumstances and causes of the accident with a view to preventing a recurrence," an AAIA spokesperson said.

Throughout the investigation, all parties concerned were properly consulted on the report. The report is available for downloading on the AAIA webpage (www.tlb.gov.hk/aaia/eng/investigation_reports/index.html).

The AAIA, an independent investigation authority formed under the Transport and Logistics Bureau, is responsible for the investigation of civil aircraft accidents and incidents in accordance with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation (Investigation of Accidents) Regulations (Cap. 448B) and with reference to the ICAO's standards.
