​A 49-year-old male person in custody at Tai Lam Correctional Institution attempted suicide on March 5. After being rescued, he was sent to a public hospital for treatment and was certified dead today (March 7).
      
     At 3.10am on March 5, the person in custody attempted suicide by hanging with a bedsheet tied to the grille bars of his dormitory. Correctional officers immediately provided first-aid treatment to the person in custody and sent him to a public hospital for treatment. After being rescued, he remained unconscious and received in-patient treatment at the public hospital. His condition deteriorated today, and he was certified dead at 12.08pm.
      
     The case has been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
      
     The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of theft in February 2025.
