Pro-Chancellor of Hong Kong Metropolitan University appointed
*************************************************************
The Government announced today (October 6) that the Chief Executive, in his capacity as Chancellor of the Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), has accepted the recommendation of the HKMU Council and appointed Dr Eddy Fong as Pro-Chancellor of the HKMU with effect from November 1, 2023, for a term of three years.

The Secretary for Education, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, welcomed the appointment. "Dr Fong is a veteran professional accountant and has been devoted to public services. He was first appointed to the HKMU Council in 2003 and served as the Chairman of the Council from 2009 to 2016, making significant contributions to leading the HKMU to sustainably develop into a full-fledged comprehensive university. I am confident that with his wealth of experience, Dr Fong will lead the HKMU Court in continuing to provide invaluable advice for the HKMU's long-term development," she said.

Dr Choi also paid tribute to Dr Charles Lee Yeh-kwong, the outgoing Pro-Chancellor of the HKMU. "Dr Lee has served the HKMU for more than two decades. He served as the Council Chairman from 1998 to 2003 and 2004 to 2009, and was appointed as the inaugural Pro-Chancellor in 2013, serving in that position to date. The HKMU's significant achievements over the years owe much to Dr Lee's contributions," she said.

According to the Hong Kong Metropolitan University Ordinance, the Chancellor may, on the recommendation of the Council, appoint a person to be the Pro-Chancellor. On the authority of the Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellor may exercise the powers and perform the duties of the Chancellor, including conferring degrees and other academic awards in the name of the University.
