Manslaughter in Lantau North
****************************
Police today (September 27) charged a 39-year-old expatriate engineer with one count of manslaughter in relation to a fatal industrial accident in 2017.

The accident, which occurred on March 29, 2017, involved the collapse of a temporary working platform beneath the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge under construction, leading to the deaths of two foreign men aged 22 and 40, as well as causing injuries to three others.

The New Territories South Regional Crime Unit launched a comprehensive investigation, taking into account relevant investigation reports released subsequently. The cause of the accident was believed to be related to serious negligence by a 39-year-old expatriate engineer hired by a contractor during the construction period. The engineer had already left Hong Kong after the incident. After seeking legal advice, the Police issued a wanted warrant for the man on suspicion of "manslaughter".

The man arrived at the Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (September 26) and was immediately arrested and detained for investigation. He was later charged by the Police.

The case will be mentioned at the Sha Tin Magistrates' Court tomorrow morning (September 28).
