     The Legislative Council (LegCo) Subcommittee to Study Policy Issues Relating to the Harbourfront conducted a site visit on the development projects along Victoria Harbour today (September 20) to understand the latest development of these projects.

     Accompanied by representatives of the Development Bureau, Members boarded the Government Launch "Tin Hau" to receive a briefing from the Government on various harbourfront enhancement initiatives on both sides of Victoria Harbour. Members were also briefed on a number of new harbourfront designs and management models, including the "incremental approach", with the aim of first connecting the waterfront promenades and thereby advancing the opening of harbourfront sites for public enjoyment. Members exchanged views with the Government on the development of the harbourfront on both sides of Victoria Harbour during the visit.

     Members observed various harbourfront development projects on Hong Kong Island onboard, including the New Central Harbourfront; the Pierside Precinct and Water Sports and Recreation Precinct in Wan Chai North; the East Coast Park Precinct in North Point; the Boardwalk underneath the Island Eastern Corridor; the Quarry Bay Park and Shau Kei Wan Typhoon Shelter; the Belcher Bay Promenade; as well as harbourfront developments in Kennedy Town and Sai Ying Pun. Members learnt that of the 13.2 kilometres developable promenade in Hong Kong Island North, 10.2km has been opened and another 2.8km will be opened in the coming five years. By then, over 90 per cent (i.e. 13km) of the developable promenade in Hong Kong Island North will be connected, spanning from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan.

     Members also observed harbourfront development projects in Kowloon onboard, including the promenade developments in Yau Tong and Lei Yue Mun; the promenade projects in Cha Kwo Ling, Kai Tak, Ma Tau Kok and To Kwa Wan; the Hung Hom Urban Park, Hung Hom and Tsim Sha Tsui Promenades; as well as the promenade developments in West Kowloon Cultural District, New Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter, Tai Kok Tsui and Cheung Sha Wan. Members learnt that the developable promenade in Kowloon amounts to 20.2km, of which 9.8km has been opened and another 6km will be opened in the coming five years. By then, about 80 per cent, (i.e. 15.8km) of the developable promenade in Kowloon will be connected.

     Members who participated in the visit were the Chairman of the Subcommittee, Mr Tony Tse, the Deputy Chairman of the Subcommittee, Mr Edward Leung and Subcommittee members Ms Doreen Kong and Mr Chan Hok-fung; as well as non-Subcommittee members Mr Paul Tse, Mr Frankie Yick, Mr Chan Siu-hung and Mr Yim Kong.
