The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Housing Authority:

The Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) today (September 18) held a forum titled "Evolution of Public Housing in Hong Kong - Dialogue with the New Generation". The speakers included the Secretary for Housing, Ms Winnie Ho; Former Deputy Director of Housing (Development and Construction) and former President of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, Ms Ada Fung; and renowned Hong Kong history expert Mr Cheng Po-hung. Through dialogues, the three speakers engaged young professionals to explore the future development of public housing.

At the forum, Ms Ho said, "This year marks the 50th anniversary of the HA. Along with providing homes for millions of residents, the HA has also made significant contributions to the advancement of construction skills and technology over the years. In the future, we will continue to dedicate ourselves to introducing innovative building technologies and enriching the housing ladder to address the needs of different homebuyers." She also encouraged young people to strive for higher positions on the housing ladder while planning their future.

Ms Fung pointed out, "In pursuance of the effective use of technology and innovative design in public housing development, quality should always be the foremost fundamental principle."

Mr Cheng stated, "Public housing has always been a place where the grassroots live in contentment. The life in housing estates has been filled with strong neighbourly bond. Now that the lifestyles of public housing residents have changed, the management of housing estates has become diversified to keep pace with the times."

"Evolution of Public Housing in Hong Kong - Dialogue with the New Generation" is one of celebration events for the 50th anniversary of the HA, consisting of three sessions: (1) Dialogue with the Secretary for Housing: Shaping Public Housing and the Future of Hong Kong; (2) Dialogue with the Master: Charting the Path for Public Housing Design and Construction; and (3) Dialogue with the Hong Kong History Expert: A Touch on the Precious Memories of Life in Public Housing.

Held at Youth Square in Chai Wan, the forum attracted over 200 participants including young professionals and students from tertiary institutions. The speakers shared their insights about the development trend, design and construction, and humanistic features of public housing, which have evolved over time. They encouraged young individuals who have joined the Housing Department or are preparing to pursue a career in the housing sector to uphold the belief of people-based approach when coping with difficulties and challenges.

The theme of the HA's 50th anniversary celebration is "Carving for the Future". "Carving" symbolises the HA's relentless efforts over the years, working hand in hand with stakeholders to build better homes for people in Hong Kong. "Future" signifies the HA's commitment to leading the development of public housing, striving for progress and overcoming challenges.

Various activities and events are being organised as part of the 50th anniversary celebration. These include a Blueprint x Footprint Treasure Hunt self-guided tour of housing estates, a public housing photo contest, a 3x3 basketball challenge and a public exhibition that cater for citizens of different ages and interests.
