Film Archive to premiere "Farewell to My Concubine" (4K restored version)
***********************************************************************************
The Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present the Hong Kong premiere of the 4K restored version of "Farewell to My Concubine" (1993) at 2.30pm on September 30 (Saturday) at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre (HKCC), with another screening at 7.30pm, enabling audiences to revisit this timeless classic on the big screen. These screenings are one of the programmes of the Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival 2023.

This year is the 30th anniversary of the debut of "Farewell to My Concubine". The film earned more than a dozen international awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It is the only Chinese language film that has garnered a Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival, and is named one of the "All-Time 100 Movies" by Time magazine. To honour the original creative ideas of director Chen Kaige, the film's presenter, Tomson (Hong Kong) Films Co, Limited commissioned and financed the 4K restoration of the film to return the film as close as possible to the visual and audio glory of its initial release. The presenter also authorised the HKFA to present the screenings of the 4K edition, enabling the charm of this legendary cinematic treasure to enchant audiences once again.

Adapted from the novel with the same Chinese title by Lillian Lee, "Farewell to My Concubine" tells a poignant story of a complicated relationship between a male Peking opera actor trained to play female roles from a young age, Cheng Dieyi, played by Leslie Cheung, and a fellow male actor Duan Xiaolou, who grew up with Cheng. The meticulous and profound performance by Cheung in the film also marked an unforgettable moment of his career.

Ticket holders of the screenings can visit an exhibition outside the Grand Theatre on the 2/F of the HKCC, showcasing a selection of overseas posters of the film. The posters will also be displayed at the 1/F Foyer of the HKFA from October 4 to December 30 with free admission.

The film is in Mandarin with Chinese and English subtitles. Tickets priced at $45 will be available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk) from tomorrow (September 1).
