LegCo Panel on Transport visits Modular Integrated Construction lift assembly yard under Universal Accessibility Programme (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     At the invitation of the Highways Department, the Legislative Council Panel on Transport visited the Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) lift assembly yard under the Universal Accessibility Programme (UA Programme) today (July 21) to learn about the Government's latest progress in building barrier-free facilities in public walkways.

     Members first received a briefing from representatives of the Highways Department on the UA Programme, which was launched in 2012 by the Government to retrofit lifts and ramps at public walkways to facilitate the public to commute. Members learnt that out of the 384 items the Government plans to implement, 190 had been completed as at the end of April this year. The rest were either under construction or pending detailed design and other related works.

     Members then observed an illustration of the structure of a MiC lift through 3D-printed models and understood that through the MiC method lift tower or components are installed in the factories before delivery to the sites for final assembly. It can shorten construction time of a lift by up to six months, and hence enhance construction cost-effectiveness.
 
     Members were then given an overview of the operation of the assembly yard and visited the production line to observe assembled MiC modules. They also watched a demonstration of on-site assembly works.

     Members who participated in the visit were the Panel Chairman, Mr Chan Han-pan, the Deputy Chairman, Mr Chan Siu-hung, and Panel member Mr Tony Tse.
