LCSD launches free online programme "Theatre 101 - Theatre and You Know What"

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has launched a free online programme, "Theatre 101 - Theatre and You Know What". The programme, consisting of a series of five episodes, aims to introduce in a light-hearted manner different theatrical forms, including documentary theatre, physical theatre, devising theatre, immersive theatre and new writing theatre. Local theatre directors, a scriptwriter and performers have been invited to provide brief introductions, demonstrations or sharing of works and experiences so that audiences can learn about the creative process and styles of contemporary theatrical genres easily. The first episode is now available on the department's Edutainment Channel.

     The content of each episode is outlined below:

Episode 1: Documentary Theatre (now available online)
To explain the process of creating documentary theatre, and how to present real-life stories and social issues onstage and in multidimensional ways.
Guest: Sit Hoi-fai (actor)

Episode 2: Physical Theatre
To explain and demonstrate how actors perform physical theatre to make use of their body movements to tell a story in different ways, and to stimulate audiences to create more associations with the story.
Guest: Chan Ting-hin (director)

Episode 3: Devising Theatre
To show how abstract ideas develop into concrete stories in the absence of a script in devising theatre through impromptu discussion, improvised rehearsals and the adding of different theatrical elements.
Guest: Kingston Lo (director)

Episode 4: Immersive Theatre
To introduce how immersive theatre breaks the boundaries of auditorium and stage, involving audiences in the performance, and giving each audience a unique and personal theatrical experience.

Episode 5: New Writing Theatre
Introducing the differences between new writing and traditional theatre, and sharing the script writing experience and ways to enjoy the works with the aid of performances and interview clips.
Guest: Wu King-yeung (scriptwriter)

     The free online programme "Theatre 101 - Theatre and You Know What" is conducted in Cantonese. Each episode is approximately seven minutes long with Chinese and English subtitles.
