DH to promote "Whole School, Whole Health" (with photos)
******************************************************************
The Department of Health (DH) organised the Recognition Ceremony cum Schools Sharing on Health Promoting School (HPS) Programme today (June 29). The event provided a platform for participating school representatives to share their experiences so as to enhance understanding of the HPS concept and benefits gained from the application of the HPS concept.

HPS is an idea promulgated by the World Health Organization, which aims to strengthen a school's capacity as a healthy setting for living, learning and working through a concerted effort of all its members and the community. The DH has launched the HPS Programme as a pilot project in 30 primary and secondary schools since the 2019/20 school year. Based on six key factors, namely healthy school polices, a school's physical environment, a school's social environment, community links, action competencies for healthy living, and school health care and promotion services, the DH has assisted participating schools to develop school-based health promotion action plans and work towards the goal of building a healthy campus.

The Director of Health, Dr Ronald Lam, officiated at the recognition ceremony today. Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Lam said that the Health Promoting School Framework promoted by the World Health Organization has been adopted by many countries and regions around the world and has proven to improve the physical and psychosocial health of students effectively. Dr Lam thanked the participating schools in building a solid foundation on how to implement the HPS concept in school. Meanwhile, he hoped that stakeholders from various professions and different sectors, including the Government, school leaders, teachers, parents, community partners, etc, can spare no effort in jointly promoting the health and well-being of students and let every school become an HPS.

Other guests attending the event today included members of the Working Group on HPS and around 100 representatives from secondary and primary schools. The 30 secondary and primary schools that participated in the HPS programme were presented with recognition awards for their support to the programme. Prizes of the Sticker Design Competition (primary schools) and Video Shooting Contest (secondary schools) were also awarded in the recognition ceremony. The award-receiving stickers and video clips have been uploaded to the HPS Programme website, members of the public can also visit the Centre for Health Protection Facebook page later for viewing the content.

Moreover, schools participating in the HPS programme shared their experiences in promoting HPS. Vice Principal of YLPMS Alumni Association Tang Ying Yip Primary School Mr Yeo Chun Kit and the Principal of HHCKLA Buddhist Leung Chik Wai College, Ms Wong Sau Yi, introduced how they promulgated healthy school polices and organised thematic activities and workshops to encourage students to build a healthy lifestyle.

The DH will continue to promote the HPS programme in the 2023/24 school year. The programme will be renamed as the Whole School Health Programme with the slogan "Whole School, Whole Health". It aims to assist schools in carrying out school-based health promotion work in a more comprehensive and effective manner, which further enhances the implementation of the HPS concept.
