HKO organises Tropical Cyclone Name Collection Activity
*******************************************************
The Tropical Cyclone Name Collection Activity organised by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) was launched online today (June 21).

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific/World Meteorological Organization Typhoon Committee has adopted a list of tropical cyclone names with local characteristics nominated by its 14 Members to designate tropical cyclones in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea since 2000. The list includes 10 names provided by Hong Kong, China. When a tropical cyclone name is requested to be retired by the Typhoon Committee due to serious casualties and economic losses, the Member who provided that name will submit proposed replacement names to the Typhoon Committee for consideration.

This year marks the 140th anniversary of the HKO. Through this activity, the Observatory hopes to identify additional suitable names with Hong Kong characteristics to expand the reserve list of tropical cyclone names of Hong Kong, China. Opportunity is also taken to raise public awareness and knowledge of hazards caused by tropical cyclones.

The first stage of the Tropical Cyclone Name Collection Activity will be conducted online from today till July 31, 2023. Members of the public can submit their suggested tropical cyclone names via the dedicated webpage (eforms.weather.gov.hk/tcname/index.fm).

After consolidation and initial assessment, shortlisted names will be made available for public voting online later this year in the second stage of the activity, with a view to selecting suitable tropical cyclone names with Hong Kong characteristics. Relevant details will be announced in due course.
