Withered Old and Valuable Tree in Tsuen Wan removed
****************************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) today (May 16) removed one withered Old and Valuable Tree (OVT) in Jockey Club Tak Wah Park to ensure public safety.

The tree being removed was Ginkgo biloba listed on the Register of OVTs with a height of 9 metres (registration number LCSD TW/6). The health of the tree was found deteriorating with sparse tree crown density and twigs dieback since 2018 by the LCSD. Since then, the department had enhanced maintenance work and carried out regular health inspections on the tree so as to make corresponding follow-up arrangements.

In 2020, the tree's health condition continued to worsen. Inspections and maintenance works were then strengthened, such as conducting soil aeration, applying fertiliser and enlarging the tree pit. However, on-site inspections in August 2022 by the LCSD showed that the wood tissue of the tree was dehydrated completely with no new bud emergence observed, and confirmed the tree was withered.

Upon consultation with the Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section of the Development Bureau, the Urban Forestry Advisory Panel, and the Tsuen Wan District Council on removal of the tree, the LCSD removed the tree today accordingly. The LCSD will replant one Sapium sebiferum at a nearby location.

A spokesman for the LCSD reiterated that the department would continue to adopt a prudent approach in inspecting and managing trees under its care. Removal of problematic trees will be undertaken only when no other viable risk mitigation measure is available.
