SWD holds Let's Join Foster Care Service event to appeal for participation in foster care service (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The Social Welfare Department (SWD) today (May 14) organised the Let's Join Foster Care Service event. With game booths and a thematic exhibition, the event aims to enhance public understanding on foster care service and appeal for more people to register as foster parents.

The event was organised by the SWD and co-organised by 11 foster care agencies. The Director of Social Welfare, Miss Charmaine Lee, officiated at the event. Addressing the event, she said that foster care service enables children, whose family cannot adequately take care of them due to family circumstances, to live under the love and care of foster parents in a family setting. The SWD will continue to enhance the development and promotion of foster care service, and encourage more people in the community to participate in the service.

Miss Lee said that she hoped the event today can enhance public understanding not only of the meaning of foster care service, but also the commitment and hard work of foster parents. She appealed to those with a passion to become foster parents, and stressed that any person in good health with the ability and willingness to spend time and take care of children in a safe environment can register as foster parents to help needy children.

The game booths at the event today all featured foster care service. A thematic exhibition was also set up to showcase the meaning of foster care, and included experience sharing by foster parents.

Currently, there are about 880 foster children in placements. The SWD has recently introduced the "one-plus-one" recruitment programme to encourage persons interested in joining foster care service to pair up with their family and friends to support each other to care for foster children.

Members of the public who are interested in becoming foster parents may contact the SWD's Central Foster Care Unit at 2573 2282 during office hours.
