The following is issued on behalf of the Family Council:

The Family Council held the "5.14 Free Tram Ride Day for the International Day of Families" today (May 14) in celebration of the International Day of Families. Members of the public and their families spent a happy weekend exploring Hong Kong Island by free tram rides. It is estimated that about 200 000 people have enjoyed the rides.

The Under Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, Mr Clarence Leung, and the Chairperson of the Family Council, Ms Melissa Pang, officiated at the launch ceremony of the Free Tram Ride Day at Whitty Street Tram Depot, Western District, and took pictures with The But's Family tram. Guests of the launch ceremony and their families then boarded the tram to travel from Western District to Wan Chai District. They enjoyed the city scenery along the way while exchanging views on maintaining harmonious family relationships.

The three The But's Family trams will continue to run along Hong Kong Island for four weeks after the Free Tram Ride Day to deliver the message of "marital happiness and harmony".

The United Nations proclaimed May 15 of every year as the International Day of Families to promote awareness of issues relating to families in the international community. The Family Council wishes to promote family core values and publicise the culture of loving families through International Day of Families events. Members of the public are welcome to visit the Council's Happy Family Info Hub (www.familycouncil.gov.hk) for details of upcoming events and programmes as well as family-related information.
