Senior appointment (with photos)

     The Government announced today (May 12) the appointment of Mr Tony Wong Chi-kwong as the Government Chief Information Officer following an open-cum-in-service recruitment exercise. Mr Wong will take up the appointment on May 15, 2023, to succeed Mr Victor Lam Wai-kiu who has proceeded on pre-retirement leave after 37 years of service.
                                                                                                                     
     Concerning Mr Wong's appointment, the Secretary for the Civil Service, Mrs Ingrid Yeung, said, "Mr Wong possesses sound professional skills, broad experience and proven management abilities. I have every confidence that Mr Wong will take a leading role in championing the development of information and communications technology, and smart city and e-government progress in Hong Kong. I also trust that colleagues of the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer will continue to give their best under Mr Wong's leadership to meet the challenges ahead."
 
     On the retirement of Mr Lam, who has proceeded on pre-retirement leave, Mrs Yeung said, "Mr Lam has rendered 37 years of loyal service to the community of Hong Kong. During his tenure as Government Chief Information Officer, he made significant contributions, particularly the formulation of the Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint and the application of information technology to support the Government's anti-epidemic strategies and measures. I wish him a fulfilling and happy retirement."
 
     Brief biographical notes of the two officers are set out below:
 
Mr Victor Lam Wai-kiu

     Mr Lam was appointed as the Government Chief Information Officer from July 6, 2018, to December 27, 2022. He joined the Government as an Analyst/Programmer II in August 1985, and rose to the ranks of Chief Systems Manager in April 2004, Assistant Director of Information Technology Services in October 2007 and Deputy Director of Information Technology Services in October 2011.
 
Mr Tony Wong Chi-kwong

     Mr Wong joined the Government as an Analyst/Programmer II in August 1988, and rose to the ranks of Chief Systems Manager in October 2009, Assistant Director of Information Technology Services in August 2016 and Deputy Director of Information Technology Services in February 2021.
