Recognising nurses' contribution on International Nurses Day 2023 (with photos)
*******************************************************************************
To echo the International Nurses Day 2023, which is being celebrated today (May 12), the Department of Health (DH) has organised various activities to express gratitude and appreciation to nursing colleagues of the DH who have been working tirelessly to provide public health services and combat the epidemic.

The International Council of Nurses has designated May 12 as International Nurses Day every year, with nurses from member organisations around the world jointly planning the future of the nursing profession and meeting its professional needs. With the theme of "Our Nurses. Our Future", the International Nurses Day 2023 proposes a vision for nursing to respond to global healthcare challenges and to improve public health, emphasising the need to learn from the experiences of the COVID-19 epidemic and transform them into actions of the future. The DH organised relevant activities this year, including holding a symposium as well as launching a thematic webpage and posting on social media platform to pay tribute to nurses.

The DH's thematic symposium was successfully held on May 6 with an attendance of over 150 nurses. During the meeting, participants shared their experiences in handling local and global public health emergencies.

Speaking at the symposium, the Director of Health, Dr Ronald Lam, remarked that "Public health nurses of the DH have played a pivotal role in local and global public health crises over the years. Apart from shouldering the important mission to continuously enhance and implement anti-epidemic measures, they also assist the Government to implement health policies and promote the development of public health nursing while fighting against the epidemic."

He added that the COVID-19 epidemic situation brought unprecedented challenges to the healthcare system. Anti-epidemic work was a race against time. Apart from striving to maintain normal public services provided by clinics and health centres,  nurses of the DH from different service units have been deployed to support a wide spectrum of urgent anti-epidemic work, including conducting epidemiological surveillance and investigations, supporting the Emergency Hotline Centre, providing medical support in quarantine centres, providing COVID-19 vaccination services, etc.

Nurses of the DH are also responsible for work related to the prevention and control of various communicable diseases such as malaria, Mpox and melioidosis. Moreover, two public health nurses had also joined the search and rescue team deployed earlier by the Government to the quake-stricken areas in Türkiye, fully demonstrating their professionalism, competence and courage in handling public health incidents.

Dr Lam expressed his gratitude to the nursing staff members for devoting themselves wholeheartedly to serve the public over the years. He encouraged them to continue to do their best in providing quality and professional service to the public.
