The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Film Development Council:
The local premiere of a new film partly financed by the Film Production Financing Scheme under the Film Development Fund (FDF), "Social Distancing", will be held this evening (May 8).
"Social Distancing" is produced by Julia Chu, Jason Siu and Tang Wai-but, and is directed and written by Gilitte Leung. The film stars Gladys Li and Angus Yeung, with a special appearance by Jeana Ho, guest appearance by Mimi Kung and co-stars Zeno Koo. The story is about a social network platform broadcaster breaking into the online world, going through a series of supernatural events and eventually rediscovering family love.
The Chairman of the Hong Kong Film Development Council, Dr Wilfred Wong, said, "'Social Distancing' illustrates people's over-reliance on technology these days through elements encountered in daily life, which increases audience interest and enables them to reflect on their relationships with people around them."
He added, "The Government has launched different schemes to support the development of the Hong Kong film industry. We hope that there will be more local productions of different genres being theatrically released in the future."
Since 2005, the Government has injected a total of $1.54 billion into the FDF to support a number of film production projects and other film-related initiatives. Since 2007, the FDF has financed 61 film projects, involving a total funding of about $230.59 million. The production budget for "Social Distancing" was around $5.8 million, with government financing amounting to about $2.03 million.
