******************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesman for Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement today (April 24) regarding a safety incident of hospital facilities:

At noon today, a staff member of the Operating Theatre in the Main Block of TMH heard sound of falling sand and stones near the staff changing room. The staff member contacted the maintenance staff immediately for inspection. After uncovering the false ceiling tiles for inspection, a piece of spalling concrete was found above the false ceiling in the female changing room. No patients or staff were injured in the incident and patient service was not affected. Works including demolition of walls and hacking off screeding have been carried out earlier at one floor immediately above the relevant location.

The incident did not involve structural safety of the building. The hospital has cordoned off the changing room and arranged emergency repairs. The hospital is very concerned about the incident and has arranged maintenance staff to conduct inspection for nearby facilities. The hospital is investigating the cause of the spalling concrete.

The hospital has reported the incident to the Hospital Authority Head Office via the Advance Incident Reporting System.
