Cluster of Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae cases at Tuen Mun Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement today (April 22):

     Eight patients (four males and four females, aged 53 to 91) in a palliative care & hospice ward of Department of Clinical Oncology in TMH have been confirmed to be carriers of Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) through active screening since April 18. One 63-year-old male patient and one 53-year-old male patient passed away due to underlying illness. The other five patients concerned are still hospitalised and treated under isolation, in which one 54-year-old female patient is in critical condition because of underlying illness and the other four are in stable condition. The remaining patient has been discharged.

     The ward concerned has adopted the following enhanced infection control measures:
 
  1. Enhanced patient and environmental screening procedures;
  2. Continuing to apply stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene of staff and patients; and
  3. Enhanced cleaning and disinfection for environment and facilities of the ward.

     The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation in the ward concerned. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
