HK SciFest 2023, organised by the Science Promotion Unit of the Hong Kong Science Museum, will be held from today (March 31) to April 16 with the theme of "Science Around You". The science museum is collaborating with more than 70 science organisations, education institutions, schools, tertiary institutions, museums, 14 government departments and related organisations to offer over 140 science-related activities for the public to discover the fun in science.

Addressing the opening ceremony today, the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mr Vincent Liu, said that science was inseparable from people's daily lives, with many natural phenomena and things around them that could be explained by science if a closer look is taken. Mr Liu hoped that the activities of the HK SciFest could stimulate the public's interest in exploring science and foster a science culture so as to encourage the younger generation to join the move towards innovation and technology (I&T) and contribute to the development of local I&T and the future of humankind.

The science museum will stage several exhibitions during the festival period, including an outreach vehicle called "Gear Up" with the theme of "Nano World" which introduces nano science through panels in a comic style with interactive exhibits; the "Climate Action - Everyone Counts" exhibition, in collaboration with the Chinese University of Hong Kong Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change which features a collection of multimedia interactive exhibits to examine the fundamentals of climate change; and a thematic exhibition in collaboration with the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer to introduce the technologies that had been used in Hong Kong to fight against the pandemic during the past three years.

The website of this year's science festival has transformed into an online science carnival, inviting partners of the festival to provide online booths, popular science e-books and online lectures to enable the public to learn about and enjoy the fun of science anytime, anywhere.

Other highlighted programmes include science exploration activities, site visits and guided tours, lectures, science demonstrations, workshops and science film shows with post screening talks, etc. The wide range of topics covers life science, chemistry, mathematics and physics, technology and engineering, Earth science and climatology, astronomy and space technology, which will provide diverse science experiences for people of all ages.
