Withered Old and Valuable Tree in Kowloon Park removed
*******************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) today (March 30) removed one withered Old and Valuable Tree (OVT) in Kowloon Park in order to ensure public safety.

The tree being removed was Celtis sinensis with a height of 13 metres. It was listed on the Register of OVTs with registration number LCSD YTM/69. The health of the tree was found to be deteriorating with sparse tree crown density and twigs dieback since 2020 by the LCSD. Since then, the department had enhanced maintenance work and carried out regular health inspections on the tree so as to make corresponding follow-up arrangements.

In 2021, the health condition of the tree continued to worsen. Inspections and maintenance works were then strengthened, such as conducting soil aeration and applying fertiliser. However, on-site tree inspections in August 2022 by the LCSD showed that the wood tissue of the tree was dehydrated completely with no new bud emergence observed, and confirmed the tree was withered. Upon consultation with the Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section of the Development Bureau, Urban Forestry Advisory Panel and Yau Tsim Mong District Council, and upon obtained support from the Tree Preservation Board, the tree was therefore removed today accordingly and the LCSD will replant one Pterocarpus indicus Willd. at the location.

A spokesman for the LCSD reiterated that the department would continue to adopt a prudent approach in inspecting and managing trees under its care. Removal of problematic trees will be undertaken only when no other viable risk mitigation measure is available.
