***************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding an earlier announcement on Enterovirus/Rhinovirus cases, the spokesperson for Caritas Medical Centre gave the following update today (March 28):

One more seven-year-old male patient of the same cubicle presented with fever or respiratory symptoms today and his viral test result was positive for Enterovirus/Rhinovirus.

In addition, two more male patients (aged 8 and 17) of another cubicle of the Developmental Disabilities Unit have been presenting with the above symptoms since March 26, and their test results were positive for Enterovirus/Rhinovirus. The hospital has subsequently arranged viral tests for other patients in the same cubicle and two more asymptomatic male patients (aged 9 and 13) tested positive.

The five patients are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition.

Enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted in the ward concerned according to prevailing guidelines. Droplet and contact precautions, hand hygiene, cleaning and disinfection of the environment and equipment have also been strengthened. The cubicles concerned have also suspended visiting arrangements.

The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation in the ward concerned. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow-up.
