In association with the Gallerie degli Uffizi in Italy, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department kicked off the Museum Summit 2023 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) today (March 24). The Museum Summit is an international mega event of the museum sector. This year's Summit, with the theme "Between", will be held at the HKCEC for two consecutive days. The Summit brings together 35 leading figures and professionals from world-renowned museums and institutions in 16 countries to exchange and share their professional experiences, research findings and innovative concepts.

In his opening remarks, the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Chan Kwok-ki, said that this year's Summit had achieved a record-breaking enrolment figure of about 2 000 participants. He extended a warm welcome to all the prominent museum and heritage professionals from all over the world, who would network and understand the latest developments of the regional and global museum landscapes through the Summit.

Mr Chan pointed out that, after three years of the pandemic, Hong Kong was finally back onstage and back in the business of culture and creativity as well as of exchange and co-operation. The Summit marks a fresh beginning for practitioners in the museum and heritage sectors in Hong Kong and around the world to establish, renew and deepen partnerships.

He added that, thanks to the strong support of the motherland under the National 14th Five-Year Plan, the Government is developing Hong Kong at full steam into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. A comprehensive blueprint is being formulated for the development of arts and culture as well as creative industries in Hong Kong. Mr Chan believes that the Summit will provide much food for thought on the upgrading of the city's museums and other arts and cultural facilities.

The Museum Summit this year is the third edition of its kind, after 2017 and 2019. There are four thematic sessions in the Museum Summit 2023, namely Between Worlds, Between Times, Between Peoples, and Between Spaces. The topics covered include cultural exchanges between places; the reinvention of old and new cultural facilities; the connection between museums and their communities; and the online and offline integration made possible by new technologies. A live broadcast has been arranged for the Summit, which had attracted over six million views online as at 5pm today.

In the opening session of the Summit, Director of the Gallerie degli Uffizi (Italy), Dr Eike Schmidt, and Deputy Administrator of the National Cultural Heritage Administration (China) Mr Gu Yucai, delivered keynote speeches as well.
