CFS urges public not to consume a kind of imported vegetable crisps containing high content of acrylamide
******************************************************************************************
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (March 14) urged the public not to consume a kind of imported vegetable crisps from the Netherlands, as the product contained high content of acrylamide. The trade should stop using or selling the product concerned immediately if they possess it.

     Product details are as follows:

Product name: Alfredo's Ortolana Salted Vegetables Chips
Brand: AMICA
Pack size: 100 grams
Place of origin: The Netherlands
Best-before date: March 25, 2023
Importer: City Super Limited

A spokesman for the CFS said, "The CFS received a notification from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) of the European Commission that the above-mentioned product was detected with high content of acrylamide. According to the information provided by the RASFF, the affected product has been imported into Hong Kong. Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted the above-mentioned local importer for follow-up. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product concerned."

The importer concerned has stopped sales, removed from shelves the affected product and has initiated a recall according to the CFS's instructions. Members of the public may call the hotline of the importer at 2736 3866 during office hours for enquiries.

Acrylamide is a chemical substance that naturally forms when frying, baking, toasting or roasting certain carbohydrate-rich foodstuffs (including potato and cereal-grain-based foods) at temperatures above 120 degrees Celsius. Studies showed that high levels of acrylamide can cause cancer in experimental animals.

The spokesman urged consumers not to consume the affected product if they have bought any. The trade should also stop using or selling the product concerned immediately if they possess it.

The CFS will alert the trade to the incident, and will continue to follow up and take appropriate action. The investigation is ongoing.
